Audition Tips

College Prep

  • Choose age appropriate material, while you may have been playing the mom or grandpa in high school, you should not sing those pieces or do monologues from those shows in which you are those characters
  • Have confidence in the pieces you’ve chosen.
  • Rehearse your pieces over and over and over!
  • Unless specifically asked, it’s best to not sing a song from the show for which you are auditioning.
  • Arrive early so you don’t feel rushed.  Remember, on time is late.
  • Be professional, ALWAYS.
  • Before your audition learn as much as you can about the audition company, the show, the directors, the school, the professors.
  • Dress appropriately for the audition.  You don’t need to come in costume for the show, but dress professionally and in shoes which you can walk.
  • Most importantly, go into the audition and be yourself.  Don’t be anyone else but you.

The College Interview

Products I love

Tripods are great when you're working with your audition coach :) over FaceTime. This is also perfect when you need to film yourself for prescreens or an audition.
A Personal Steamer can be a lifesaver for your voice, especially in the winter or when you have to stay in a hotel. Here are a few options. It's necessary to keep your vocal chords hydrated!
A good bluetooth speaker is necessary for college auditions. You'll need them when you go to Unifieds and some other colleges ask for them.
Non glare page protectors for your audition book are a must! The standard page protectors cause a glare which could potentially make your accompanist not play his/her best if they can't see all of the notes.
You need a good, sturdy binder for all of your audition material!
This one has a plastic pocket on the front you can put your headshot.
You don't want anything larger than a one inch binder otherwise it might not fit
on the piano.

How Cool is this? The BeltBox is perfect for travel and warming up in a hotel
or when you don't want to be too loud at home!
This is a great book! It's a quick read with great info.
